“The Bark Side”

Last year, Deutsch LA and Volkswagen won the Super Bowl (in terms of commercials) with “The Force,” one of the cutest and funniest ads of the year. Looks like they’re trying to do it again in 2012.

Here are a bunch of dogs in Star Wars costumes barking the famous Imperial March. It’s adorable. It’s nerdy. It’s funny. They’re dogs. You’ll love it.

As good as it is, this commercial is just a teaser for the real Super Bowl ad, which has yet to be released. The teaser directs viewers to a Volkswagen microsite promising an “Intergalactic Invite” on January 27.

I can’t imagine how they’re going to tie Star Wars into the “German Engineering” message, but we’ll see what they come up with.

Update, Feb. 3, 2012: Here’s the extended version of the 2012 Volkswagen Super Bowl commercial, featuring a dog and Darth Vader in two totally disconnected story threads. Cute, but not as good as last year’s.
