Santorum ad uses Romney look-alike

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has a new ad out that stars a Mitt Romney look-alike armed with a gun. It’s among the strangest political ads so far this campaign. Take a look:

Santorum seems to have a flair for creative commercials. He also ran a series of goofy TV spots in his 2006 Senate race, which he lost.

This ad has some quirks—that guy playing “Rombo” doesn’t look a whole lot like Mitt Romney, and of course there’s irony in running an attack ad accusing an opponent of going negative. But it also carries a message about Romney’s record in a relatively entertaining way. We see mud-slinging made literal. The gun only looks menacing and violent if you don’t know anything about guns and can’t spot it as a paintball gun. Using a Santorum cutout was a smart choice. Using the actual candidate would have forced Santorum to act, and duck for cover from mud, which would make for an embarrassing scene. So even though it’s silly, some smart choices make it a pretty decent political ad.

None of this changes my mind about Rick Santorum, an unelectable gay-basher who is really just a sideshow act on the way to the Republicans’ inevitable, begrudging nomination of Romney, the moderate.
