Groupon, Living Social run the same ad

Is Groupon plagiarizing Living Social? Or is it the other way around? Take a look at these two ads that appeared when I logged into Facebook today:

Text of two Facebook ads: Bucket List: 365 Things To Do Before You Die

Who’s the plagiarist? Unclear. I remember seeing Living Social’s “bucket list” ads first, which makes me think someone from Groupon (or a Groupon affiliate) is copying them. But I can’t be sure. It’s possible Living Social (or a Living Social affiliate) copied an old Groupon ad that is just now surfacing again.

Either way, Groupon and Living Social are separate companies and fierce competitors, but might as well be the same brand as far as consumers are concerned. Not even their own advertising copywriters can tell two brands apart. And every week there’s another new daily deal, bulk-purchase, e-mail-based advertising company joining the competition, creating more brand confusion.

(Aside: Why 365 things to do before you die? Have you only 1 year to live? And wasn’t “The Bucket List” a terrible film? Did anybody see it?)

My heart goes out to marketers for daily deal websites. You have your work cut out for you.
